Patents

A patent is issued by a federal government to an inventor or applicant that allows the patent owner to prevent others from making, using, selling or importing an invention in the country in which the patent is granted. Typically, the patent protects the invention, or its functionality, so long as the invention in new, useful and nonobvious.

CAD drawings of an invention are transformed into a drawing that is acceptable by patent offices around the world. While the function of the invention is protected — not how it looks — drawings of the most current rendering at the time of the filing of the patent application are used to help explain the invention, its key components, and what the applicant is claiming as its invention.
